Laura Svetkey, MD is the director of clinical research at the Sarah W. Stedman Nutrition and Metabolism Center. In this role, she brings a wealth of experience to the Stedman Center as she is also the director of the Duke Hypertension Center and has more than 20 years of experience in clinical research. She has been principal investigator on four NIH- sponsored multi-center studies on nutritional approaches to controlling hypertension and other obesity-related cardiovascular risk factors, including the landmark DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) clinical trial. Currently she is principal investigator on the NIH-sponsored Weight Loss Maintenance Study and is trial-wide chair of this multi-center study of behavioral approaches to long-term weight control. Together with Dr. Christopher Newgard, Dr. Svetkey has developed and leads the STEDMAN (STudy of the Effects of Diet on Metabolism And Nutrition) Project, the flagship obesity clinical study of the Stedman Center.
